Installing a custom air ram on your Probe is the best cost vs improvement modification you can get. For about $10, you can add a noticeable increase in horsepower, especially at high RPM when the power tapers off due to insufficient air getting into the cylinders. It's much better than a cone filter since you not only get a forced stream of air entering the air box, but it's cooler air than the baked air of the engine compartment. The first generation Probe's intake is extremely poorly designed. The air box opening is connected to a tube that enters the left front fender and extends forward. The opening of this tube is right behind a fender support and is completely boxed in on all sides. It has no direct contact with any airflow. Replacing this tube with a larger tube that extends further down and has an opening facing the air stream will dramatically improve airflow into the air box, while being almost unnoticeable.
Procedure:
Lift and support the vehicle.
Remove the left tire, inner splash guard, and bottom bumper splash guard.
Remove the intake tube's mounting bolts and the intake resonator's mounting bolts and remove assembly from the vehicle.
Remove the horn's mounting bolt and relocate the horn to a near location, such as the intake tube's front mounting bolt. It should be out of the way of the new intake tube.
Push any wires that can interfere with the vacuum tube out of the way and secure with wire ties.
Locate the rubber connecting sleeve that was between the air tube and the air box. Cut the larger side down to 1" and slip over the air box opening.
Slip one end of the vacuum tube over the air box opening. The cut rubber piece should make up the gap between the air box opening and the vacuum tube, since the air box opening is smaller. Use a hose clamp to secure the tube to the air box.
Work the vacuum tube through to the front bumper. From here, you'll need to find the best position of the opening of the tube. See the bottom two pictures below for an idea of how to set it up.
Use wire ties to secure the vacuum tube to the vehicle.
